Poll
Should Eric Holder be confirmed for Attorney General?

Here's how to get a dubious bill into law, or at least past the U.S. House of Representatives, which of late has deserved to be called the lower chamber:

-- First, make the bill long. Very long. So long no one may actually read it, supporters or opponents. Introduce a 310-page horse-choker of an amendment at 3 in the morning on the day of the roll-call vote. So it can't be examined too closely or too long. Only after the bill passes may its true costs emerge. To cite an old proverb I just made up: Pass in haste, repent at leisure.

-- Make sure that the bill itself, which was already 1,200 pages long before this super-sized amendment was added, surpasseth all understanding. (Which may be the only thing it has in common with the peace of God.) No sense risking a reasoned debate. Just round up enough party-line votes and give the majority its orders.

-- Insert all kinds of exceptions into the bill so those special interests that stand to benefit by them -- whether regional, economic or ideological -- will join the stampede.

-- Coat the bill and the campaign for it with high-sounding sloganspeak, if not hysteria. Warn that The End Is Near unless this bill is passed, at least if you consider the year 2100 near. (Imagine the hoots if, in 1909, the scientific establishment had announced what the world's average temperature was going to be a hundred years hence.) Accuse anyone not willing to rubber-stamp the bill of treason -- against the whole planet. Honest. See columnist Paul Krugman's latest j'accuse in the New York Times.

-- Keep the faith. Science may retain a healthy skepticism, but scientists can be as true believers as any of the rest of us, just as in the 1970s it became an article of "scientific" faith that the next ice age was imminent. Now it's global warming. Talk about running hot and cold. There's no fundamentalism like scientific fundamentalism. (Well, maybe secular fundamentalism.) Who says the Age of Faith is passed? Some folks'll believe anything if it comes from an authoritative figure in a lab coat. Or maybe Al Gore on one of his jet-setting tours in the cause of saving energy.

-- If necessary, change the subject at the last minute. Say, from climate change to creating jobs. And, hesto presto, though the vote may be close (219 to 212), a confusing bill can be on its way to becoming even more confusing law. Which is just what happened the other day in the U.S. House of Representatives. No wonder it's the Senate that's called the deliberative body. There's still hope it will stop this rush to misjudgment. Thank goodness for a bicameral legislature.

-- Forget the actual content of the bill, since few if any can understand it anyway. Instead, just recite talking points. It's a lot easier than actually thinking. Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, didn't even bother to answer the minority leader's numerous and pointed criticisms of this energy bill. Surprise: It's not actually about saving energy after all, but about providing employment. At least to hear her yell it. Instead of a speech, she just repeated, like a cheerleader: "Jobs, jobs, and more jobs. Let's vote for more jobs." And not stop to think.

Whoever said you never want to see sausage made or laws passed did a grave injustice to sausage-makers, who are surely engaged in a much more wholesome enterprise.

Maybe the bill's boosters are talking about how to create jobs for government bureaucrats and corporate carbon-counters, which this bill would certainly do. To excess. It would set up a complex market in "carbon credits" that would allow some industries to sell their carbon quotas to others. Even if such an approach reduced carbon emissions in this country, it would scarcely have any effect on total emissions worldwide. Because huge developing economies like those of India and China would continue to pour increasing amounts of carbon into the atmosphere....

But there's no need to go into detail when just chanting incantations will solve all the world's pollution problems and revive the economy, too. Jobs, jobs, and more jobs! Save Our Planet! Suspend disbelief and go with the administration's projection that taxing industries will actually "save or create" hundreds of thousands of jobs. Just as the $787 billion stimulus package was going to keep unemployment at or below 8 percent the rest of this year. It rose to 9.4 percent in May, at least according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, but what does it know?

If some 1.6 million jobs have been lost since the administration's stimulus package was passed, just think of how many more jobs would have been lost without the huge bail-outs and government outlays! Look at it this way: The worse things get, the worse they would have gotten without this administration's high-spending programs.

To quote Max Baucus, the Democratic senator who's now chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, when he was grilling Timothy Geithner, the current secretary of the Treasury and de facto CEO of General Motors, Chrysler, AIG, and who knows how many other giant corporations to come: "You created a situation where you cannot be wrong. If the economy loses two million jobs over the next few years, you can say, yes, but it would've lost 5.5 million jobs. ... You've given yourself complete leverage where you cannot be wrong, because you can take any scenario and make yourself look correct."

Heads they win, tails we lose. Not to put too fine a point on it, this numbers game is fixed. But why let mere facts get in the way of a grand vision? The numbers can be rearranged later to show how the economy is actually growing and, of course, how the planet was saved.

9.5% unemployment...
means 90.5% employment, and I am sure Obama is taking credit for creating or saving every job held by one of the 90.5%. And Bush is still responsible for every one of the 9.5%. See, wasn't that easy?

Tax and Kill.
The so called "Cap and Trade" scheme is the most perfect and pervasive tax ever devised. It will affect all goos, all services, and all individuals. And it will be completely hidden.

When the price of electricity goes up, the pols think you will blame the electric company. And when the price of gas goes up, you will blame the oil companies. When the price of food goes up, you will blame the supermarket, or the farmers, or the "middlemen". The politicians think you will never blame them.

All prices will go up.

And whenever some politician wants more money to spend, all they have to do is raise the new carbon tax a few cents more. (When have they ever NOT wanted more?) And everyone will pay.

Maybe......
If I were the CEO of any company, whether it were an energy company, or the maker of tires for semi-trucks, I would post my best, most accurate, estimate of the cost of "Cap and Trade" right on the packaging of the product. In the case of a utility, it would be listed in large print, perhaps red ink, on each month's bill. Don't allow this to be a "hidden" tax. Even the half of this country that don't pay income tax will pay this tax, and it's going to be a big one. Let everyone know how big it is, and who is responsible for it.

Of course, for the non-taxpaying half of the country, the Dems will probably increase their checks by the amount of the extra cost of living. It's only fair.

To the prognosticators of economic doom:
We have some real-world case studies to look at: five European countries (Sweden, the UK, France, Germany, and Norway) cut their CO2 emissions to below 1990 levels over the last decade. So, what happened to their economies, their GDPs, their employment rates, etc.?

Check it out and get back to us.

Frey:
You mistake "CO2 targets" under the Kyoto treaty for reality.

For example, in France O2 output actually INCREASED by 13%. Germany is hard to judge because they were absorbing the former East Germany. CO2 output in the east decreased due to the restructuring of the economy there. CO2 output in the west increased. The UK isn't too far above 1990 levels but their economy isn't doing very well.

Frey
Let's cut to the chase. Our economy depends on energy and the current recession that has been exacerbated by government debt rather than helped must open all sources of energy for jobs and reduced costs. Only then can we have an honest debate about a greener policy for private industry to undertake without government taxing. If there is money in the non-carbon efficiencies private industry will gladly sell to the tree huggers. In the meantime if China and India aren't onboard then get Oblaba off our backs because he's just bankrupting us.

http://www.worldclimatereport.com/index.php/2009/04/16/who- is-behind-the-current-emissions-trends/

Too right, Stan.
The proper name for this damnable bill is "Tax and Kill."

The true shame of the last election is now the Dims REALLY THINK everyone in the country is stupid enough to buy this crock of...stuff!

i

Stan
"You mistake "CO2 targets" under the Kyoto treaty for reality"

Pretty sure I don't. My source:

http://unfccc.int/files/essential_background/background_pub lications_htmlpdf/application/pdf/ghg_table_06.pdf

(Guess I was mistaken about Norway, Denmark was what I should have said.)

As for Germany, in 1990, West Germany had twice the CO2 emissions of East Germany. So, to achieve a 17% (1/6) reduction from the 1990 total, East German emissions would have had to have been slashed in half, while West Germany kept its emissions right where they were (or some variation of that). Aided by shutting down dirty East German plants? Undoubtedly. But did that do the whole job? Not likely.

And where did you hear that about the UK economy? According to my source, their GDP grew faster than ours did over the relevant time period.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_growt h_1990%E2%80%932007

And you'll notice that the other countries had respectable GDP growth as well.

Frey:
I admit I was using a different time period, and a different source.

But from your UN source, France for example saw a increase of 0.2% between 2000 and 2004 while the US, which had much stronger economic growth during that period, increased by 1.3%.

The smaller increase came with lower economic growth.

I have figured out what the crisis is
It appears that every crisis calls for the Democrats to use a nuclear option in dealing with it. First a financial crisis, the October surprise which I would almost be willing to bet was brought on by extremely wealthy people like good ol' George Soros, an enemy of our nation. This required billions of dollars in TARP funds. Then there was the stimulus of almost a trillion dollars, then the automotive crisis, so on and so forth. What are these things that cause Washington to spend hundreds of billions on top of hundreds of billions. If you understand Marxism, Socialism, Communism and such, the answer is simple, the economy. It seems like every time they say that there are "green shoots" Washington does something to drive it back down. The collapse of our economy is critical to moving to a Fascist/Marxist state, which is what Obama is. This man sees our Constitution as a roadblock to his Marxist agenda along with the rule of law so until he can change it, he will just ignore it. I have no doubt that if he were a Republican; we would have already held impeachment hearings and removed him from office as a traitor. Yes, I said it, Obama is a traitor along with any Congressman/woman that voted for the energy bill. As a matter of fact, anyone that has voted for any bill without reading should also be labeled as a traitor. The energy bill will cause gas to go up 70+% and electricity by 90+%. Even the cost of bribes in Washington is going up. It now takes $3.5 billion to bribe a Congresswoman in order to get their vote just look at Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur from Ohio. She was bribed with $3.5 billion for her district in order to get her vote for the energy bill. Get ready because now Obama has stated that he is willing to "discuss" bailouts for states, probably only Democrat ran states. We must stop the madness in Washington and it begins with the Tea Parties where all of us racist, domestic terrorist come together as one voice.

THE GREAT DEPRESSOR
Irony of ironies, Barack Hussein Obama, hailed by the fawning liberal media as the "new FDR" is turning a recession into a depression and becoming the next Herbert Hoover.

Click my name and read my piece: Barack Obama: The Great Depressor

Cap and Trade
If it weren't for "Pelosi's Pusillanimous Poodles" and 8 RINO's, the Cap and Trade bill, formally called the "Waxman-Markey Bill", would have been stopped. Actually, the bill should have been more appropriately called the

"CON MAN-MALARKEY BILL". It's the biggest CON foisted on American taxpayers in the history of this country. It's also full of MALARKEY (that's trade lingo for porkulus handouts to Obama supporters)

We need more energy not less!
We should be building nuclear reactors and drilling for oil; not Capping oil wells and Trading nuclear technologies to foreign governments.
Anyone who supports H.R.2454 is solving a problem that doesn't exist, hasn't read the bill, and is doing a great disservice to America.
Support the Troops.
God Bless America.

Cap & Trade & Bribes
This
Posted July 1st, 2009 at 11.42am in Energy and Environment, Ongoing Priorities.
From today’s Washington Times:

When House Democratic leaders were rounding up votes Friday for the massive climate-change bill, they paid special attention to their colleagues from Ohio who remained stubbornly undecided.

They finally secured the vote of one Ohioan, veteran Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Toledo, the old-fashioned way. They gave her what she wanted - a new federal power authority, similar to Washington state’s Bonneville Power Administration, stocked with up to $3.5 billion in taxpayer money available for lending to renewable energy and economic development projects in Ohio and other Midwestern states.

House Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry A. Waxman, California Democrat, included the Kaptur project in a 310-page amendment to the legislation unveiled at 3 a.m. Friday, just hours before the bill was to be debated on the House floor. The amendment was packed with other vote-getting provisions, both large and small, that had been sought by dozens of wavering Democrats.

Kenyan King Hussein and the Konquest--
of the American Sheeple. This bill is designed to put the U.S.A. on a par with Kenya, Somalia ,and at Best, Guatemala. Mexico is getting ready to invade with troops, when the collapse occurs, completely wrecking our Soverignty.[What's Left of it] King Hussein, of America, is President of the U.S.,the same way Maximillian was Emperor of Mexico, he was a foreigner "Installed" there by Napoleon III. at the request of Rich Conservative(?) Elitists. Barky was a Foreigner Installed in the White House, by Currency Manipulator, and Foreigner, George Schwartz [Soros' REAL Name] who crashed the American economy at the proper moment, to ensure the Defeat of McCain. Barky's Private ACORN ARMY falsified the voting process, to be positive the EVIL R's didn't "Steal" another election. The Cap And Trade will DESTROY the middle class, leaving only the VERRRRRRY RICH, and the SERFS. The New World Order is HERE NOW. I can't beleive that we haven't Already marched on Washington D.C., RED Queen Pelosi, Harry the Horse-@$$ Reid, and The Congress!!!

Cap and Confuse
Okay. I "read" the Climate Bill. Well, I started to read it. It is written in the usual government doublespeak/gobbledygook and is basically incomprehensible, which leads me to believe that no one else has actually read the thing all the way through. A lot of ink is spent on "definitions" of various terms that ought to be easily understood by a 4th grader (maybe not a government school 4th grader...). There are payments to various manufacturers for various reasons hidden away within it. (I wouldn't mind being paid for every major appliance I didn't make or for the potential loss of income from whatever evil climate endangering thingie I might have made.) The bill itself is an incomprehensible waste of paper that will accomplish nothing other than to provide for government jobs. Endless government jobs. No climate will suffer under this bill. The climate will go on as it will regardless of man's tiny impact on it.

Henceforth, it should be an absolute mandate that every bill must be read aloud before the entire House or Senate. It should then be discussed in detail for at least one week before any vote is taken. No bill should have more than a single topic/issue. No riders. No last minute additions. No off-topic sneaky little pork projects tacked on to the bill for Congressman X or Senator Y's home state. Bills should be written in simple english and all tortured governmentese should be avoided at all costs. If you can't even understand the language of the bill, how can you make an informed decision about how it will affect your constituents?

But, you say, nothing will get done!!!!! Oh, the joy...

rowly
also check the list of reasons to oppose cap and trade at today's national review.

It really shows what the dims have in mind and who really, pardon the expressions, gets screwed by the dims.

The bill does nothing, as you know, except transfer wealth, reward the special interests loyal to the dims and give flap ears more billions to redistribute to the victims he cares for more than the earners who make this country work

Richard,
You are absolutely right.

Cap and Swindle - Vote them Out!
People have had enough. It's time to get the sheep to pay attention and get out of the sheeple mentality.

Here's a strong message from some true sheepdogs who are trying to get the sheep to wake up and smell the wolves:

And all of you other common-sense posters, we are preaching to the choir here. We all agreee that this bill is nonsense.

The question is, how can we influence people who don't read TH, or anything at all?

julie
there are many who visit these threads who do not post and they need to be kept apprised of what is going on.

Plus I find new and useful info from other conservs who recognize the danger.

And finally the more you post concerning the issues the more you sharpen your arguments to use against the trolls.

And if nothing else there is a bit of wicked pleasure just annoying the trolls

and thanks for you feedback

Original Cacushead
True, but what I've seen tells me that people who visit TH have already made up their minds.

Heres what we do know.

Inserted into the Cap & Trade Bill is a provision that will require Homeowners to get their house approved by the Federal Government before they are permitted to sell it.

Liberals support the Cap & Trade Bill.

Suicide for America
You only have one choice for our future.
http://www.DonCordellforPresident.com
or turn off the lights, the gas, stop buying food, send all your money to Obama, join the New World Order, One World Government, and this is the end of the United States because you keep electing Congress and the Senate that are intent upon destroying our nation.
Today is the day to show the world, you will not surrender, stand up and fight to save our nation. Be a Patriot, not a sheep.

"People who visit TH"
"People who visit Town Hall have already made up their minds" I respctfully Challenge that position..Prior to this past Election,08, I had never voted a Straight ticket in my Life and I'm OLD!!
Having said that, I have also "Been Around" a bit and I DO know a *Shell Game* when I see one!! This *Climate Change* (WHAT THE H&LL HAPPENED TO GLOBAL WARMING??) thing is a Big-Money Scheme pure and simple or Mr T-BO wouldn't have a thing to do with it, U think??
I WILL Survive, but most of my "Help Ur Neighbor" Doctrine is rapidly evaporating!! I'm gonna let those who "Brought Mr OB to the Dance" fend for themselves.. Seems like the thing to do to me..Got a BETTER IDEA?? CHEERS
