Iraq is Victorious... Over the 'Foreign' U.S.?

Should Eric Holder be confirmed for Attorney General?

I've been stewing over something really lousy that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has been saying since June 20: that Iraqis have won a "great victory" over the "foreign presence in Iraq."

That "great victory," as he calls it, is the June 30 withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq's cities. That "foreign presence," as he calls it, is the United States -- the thousands of mainly young American men who have fought a vicious enemy under the harshest conditions for more than six long years, with 4,321 Americans killed, many thousands wounded, often grievously so, and some small, tortured number wrongfully ensnared by the U.S. military justice system in apparent deference to Iraqi political considerations.

"Ingrate" doesn't begin to describe this al-Maliki creep -- or, as all too many conservatives and Bush loyalists persist in thinking of him, our Iraqi "ally." But let's skip the labels and stick to the implications of the Iraqi prime minister's rhetoric: He has transformed long-term American sacrifice on Iraq's behalf into a residual "foreign presence" over which he now declares Iraqi victory.

The mind reels -- both at the import of Maliki's words and the tepid U.S. non-reaction to them. Asked whether he found Maliki's "terminology acceptable," Gen. Raymond Odierno went all political, talking-pointing to Iraqis' "progression in their capacities" blah, blah. The post-withdrawal "expert" assessments I've seen haven't even mentioned Iraq's "victory." Typically, John Nagl, president of Center for a New American Security, a Left-wing defense think tank with close ties to the Obama administration, is still mooning over "the strategic imperative of establishing an enduring relationship" with Iraq. Someone should break it to him that Iraq isn't going to enter into an "enduring relationship" with a "foreign presence." Like love, U.S. defense policy is blind.

This could explain why the United States has entered total pushover mode in Iraq, as dictated by the U.S.-Iraq security agreement (Status of Forces Agreement, or SOFA) negotiated by the Bush administration, all in support of Maliki's narrative of victory over ... us.

The New York Times describes "a drastically reshaped American military posture has emerged, largely because of Mr. Maliki's insistence," and notes that the rapid dismantlement of bases and outposts often is carried out "during the dark of night." Transport and resupply convoys are taking place at night, too -- all, presumably, in order to bolster Maliki's claims of "victory." As one of Maliki's political cronies put it, "They (U.S. troops) will be invisible for the people. They will turn into genies."

"Genies?" Does that mean Maliki has the USA plugged up in a bottle?

Certainly, we don't talk like free agents. Among the 150-plus bases and outposts the United States has closed in Iraqi cities this year are some U.S. commanders still considered crucial. About one such base, Brig. Gen. John M. Murray told the Times: "This is one we wanted. The Iraqi government said `no,' so now we are leaving."

This doesn't sound exactly Patton-esque, but would that we were leaving the whole sorry country. Meanwhile, the Times reports, "decisions on what Americans remain where -- doing what -- ultimately now rest with the Iraqis, and the Americans have deferred in negotiations."

Me, I feel sick.

But apparently not Lt. Col. Timothy M. Karcher, commander of forces departing Sadr City: "We will be gone in whatever way the Iraqi government tells us to be gone." Now, there's a rousing war quotation for you. Quick -- someone write a new verse to the "The Caissons Go Rolling Along."

The Times report continues: "The Americans have been strikingly sensitive" -- naturally -- "to Mr. Maliki's political position, emphasizing Iraqi primacy in all public remarks." For example, "they have declined to specify how many American troops will remain in cities, seemingly fearful of undercutting Mr. Maliki's public declarations of a full withdrawal."

What, no "Kick Me" stickers? Sorry to interrupt the old Fourth of July weenie roast, but doesn't it bother a single American out there that the United States is just kind of hanging around Iraq, full-metal rent-a-cops, waiting for some word, any word, from the self-anointed victor over the United States?

Of course, the main point here is not what we perceive as Maliki's ingratitude, or his disgraceful disregard of those Americans and allies who have fallen in Iraq. The main point of the prime minister's shocking statement is this: Iraq is not on the same side as the United States.

I'm afraid this will shock most Americans, but just let it sink in; it will explain a lot about the last six years. Meanwhile, the simple fact is, allies don't declare victory over each other. No doubt this presents a problem, at least for those among us who have claimed "victory" in Iraq for (not over) the United States. They and Maliki can't both be right. Someone is being played for a chump.

My suggestion? We should take this Fourth of July weekend to declare U.S. independence all over again -- only this time from Iraq.

When have Arabs ever been normal?
The entire culture is one of self-delusion and chest puffery.

Al Malaki resorts to the retoric of the post colonials in order to create a veneer he hopes will cover him as the U.S. takes its 'cover' and leaves.

I for one am glad that these people were given a chance to escape the mutilation and murder of the Baathists and Saddam. I've no illusion that they'll be establishing any Normandy style memorials to the fallen Americans. For that, the Arab mind and personality would require a feeling of gratitude for another that accomplished what their own cultur(a) has never been able to cement, i.e. basic human dignity.

In David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia, Col. Lawrence tells the Arabs that they need to coalesce or risk always being, a "little people."
Unfortunately, whether in the souk, bazaar, university or mosque, the culture of the Arabs is first small and then angry.

Our dead are glorious. The Iraqi's ... we'll see.

Mission Accomplished
It is a bit disheartening, to say the least, to hear the undertones of Malaki, as he seeks to placate the ambivalent ranging to resentful attitudes towards the american presence among many in the Shitte population. But as Tip O'Neil is famous for saying "all politics is local".

But if we harken back to why we went in to Iraq in the first place, it is easy to see we have met our objectives. There has been much distortion about this within the American psychy. The question was not whether Saddam provably had WMDs, it was the risk that his capability could result in transfers to Jihadist terrorists. The Duelfer Report of the Iraq Survey group found Saddam had maintained an off the shelf capability, and the regime was known to harbor terrorists for the first world trade center bombing, and aided Zaquawi's people escape after the Foley assasination - mooting any non-sense about no ties never mind jihadi terrorist cooperation. It was a matter of risk management, and who knows what may have happened over 5 or 10 years had the Bush Administration simply ignored the threat. Bringing down Saddam's regime negated the threat once and for all - at least in Iraq.

The hard work of building up a democratic government that will prevent Iraq from becomming a failed state as Afghanastan was and still is, or as Somalia is now was a necessary effort. Had Al Qaeda been able to reconstitute training camps unfettered by near-by US armed forces, the war on terror would not have been any where near as successful as it has been. By some estimates 2000 suicide bombers were deployed there, rather than in the west.

That Malaki is making such comments, to improve his election prospects, simply proves the success of our second objective.

As such the risk Saddam posed originally, and the risk of terrorists operating unfettered in Iraq after his ouster - is resolved. Mission Accomplished, and bravo George Bush!!!

Outcome
I think we are leaving Iraq in as good a condition as can be expected. Of course, it could still be a complete disaster in the future, but ultimately we have to leave that up to the Iraqis, don't we?

Let's not forget we have trillion dollar annual budget deficits for the next 10 years. Iraq is one of many expenses we can no longer afford.

Straight facts...
nicely said. Have you ever noticed that no remembers the "No Flyover Zone" President Clinton left us with and had no interest in resolving? People believe what they want. Maliki is a rat. The ultimate prize will be Iran. There will be a revolution in Tehran and the mullahs will be out.

Same old same old
Replace one Muslum government with another Muslim government, and what you still have in the end is, just another Muslim government.

Just Leave
As a conservative, I favored going after the eneimies of my home. Now the barbarians act like we are the problem. Well, who the president is be damned ...Bring them home now. As a Vietnam Era Vet, I felt the pain of doing something for nothing, and I feel for those lost and wounded in this battle. But if those we went to help hate us, pull out, all troops, businesses and money ...Let 'em eat the oil!

It's their country
It's their country. We invaded on the mistaken idea that they had weapons of mass destruction that were a danger to us.

Iraq Iran
In Iran we we somewhat assisted in the downfall of the Shaw Then the hoodlums took over the American Embassy. Pres Carter(D)proved to be totally inept at resolving the situation either by military or diplomatic means. We are now paying the price for his ineptitude. Abjinadad was part of Th gang of thugs at the embassy. He learned then that the American had very little teeth or talent for dealing with a crisis, We now know what to do with them, exploit them for political gain.
IMHO once we leave Iraq completely, and as the present Prime Minister says we are a foreign presence that they have conquered, we will. Then you will see Iran step up it's efforts to conquer Iraq. Iran is a Theocracy, Abinijad is merely a puppet on a string. Until the Muslims and Pesians are willing to throw of the tyranny of some of their religeous leaders they will never be free and they will always be at war with themselves and each other

Too bad for the Iraqi people
I am convinced we did a good thing to remove Saddam Hussein (no relationship to Barack Hussein Obama) and his murderous cronies.

Unfortunately, the years of suppression, and the uneducated mindset of the typical Iraq citizen, will inevitably lead to a continued lifestyle of servitude for the masses.

We cleaned up one mess, and lost many wonderful soldiers doing it, but enough is enough!

No citizenry can be saved from ignorance and oppression unless they choose it. This is a lesson we need to learn here in the USA as well.

I say, "Get our fighting men and women out of there, with a rousing vote of gratitude from their fellow Americans, and let Iraq fend for itself."

Very quickly, Iraq will again deteriorate into some form of Muslim dictatorship or other and I don't want our military to risk anymore lives to save these people from their own determined, religiously-inspired stupidity.

We need to clean up the mess we have at home, find a true patriot to run for POTUS, and vote the current USA "regime" out of office.

Surprise !
It is not unusual for a politician to say what they need to get elected. You need no further proof than the election in this last November in this country.

Why are you surprised ? Virtue is its own reward. Few will ever say thanks.

West does not speak for the Iraqis!
Look....,I agree that we did the right thing by taking out Saddam.

I know firsthand that our soldiers in Iraq KNOW that their presence is appreciated by most of the people.

Miss West is not on the receiving end of any top secret strategy calls.

Malaki is dancing a fine dance trying to keep all the different factions in his country on the path to freedom.A game of chess is being played while simultaneously engaging in a little Jenga and 5 card stud.

Miss West is playing CHECKERS!

Lies, Liars and Politicians
Malaki is lying about our troops leaving as Obama lied that he would immediately pull our troops out of Iraq. Master Politicians at work.

Bush was right.

Bush was right to remove Saddam.

Bush was wrong to listen to the Liberal Colin Powell and attempt to "fix what we broke."

Republican Presidents do much better when they ignore Liberals.

No entangling alliances
I am a conservative who opposed our entry into Iraq.

When we did enter, I supported our action based on he fact that both parties gave Bush the grand OK to attack. I was appalled at how the Democrats turned on Bush once we were engaged. N

Now, we have won and we are pulling out. Great! Both Bush & Obama agree that we need to get out; it certainly appears that most of the American and Iraqui publics want us out.

So, let's get out as quickly as we can. If Maliki ends up being killed, so what? If the country descends into violence, so what? We certainly are not doing anything meaningful in Darfur, North Korea, or any of the other hell holes in the world.

And while we are at it let's get out of Afghanistan, Western Europe, Korea, etc. etc.

Let's become a nation that defends itself, engages in free trade, and minds our own business. Isn't that what George Washingon urged -- no entangling alliances?

This is why
when certain people warned us not to get involved in the situation in Iran, they were being the smart. This is one time when I agreed with Obama. Unfortunately, he bent to the pressure of those who want us to be the world's police.

I am ashamed to say that many conservatives encouraged us to "stand up for freedom" in Iran. What is going on in Iran is a power struggle that has nothing to do with freedom.

No more engaging in the Middle East or anywhere else where Muslims rule. They are two faced and will use anyone who is fool enough to help them. They are the ultimate manipulaters.

Leave them alone, and hopefully they will all eventually kill each other.

What a Shock
Imagine that. I thought we were going to be greeted as liberators. And now, after all we did was invade their country (which had nothing to do with 9/11), kill their citizens, destroy their infrastructure, trample on their children, and draw terrorists into their borders so we could "kill them there so they wouldn't come here", they are happy we're leaving. What ingrates these people are.

They're as ungrateful as we were when the last British ship set sail after the Revolutionary War.

Ms West has no clue
Why this site lets Ms West write about anything other then baking cookies is beyond me.

Who is she to criticize a man of the caliber of Gen Odierno? How many YEARS has that man lived in IRAQ? How much expertise does he have and how much time writting and understanding our military and political objectives there? He is in constant CLOSE contact with P.M. Al-Malaki and all the other key players there.

THIS IS A VICTORY FOR THE IRAQI PEOPLE!!

Against all odds, and against the "wisdom" of liberals and people like Ms West, the Iraqi people have a government that is Democraticaly elected thanks to our military. They also have a trained and capable Army thanks to our military training teams and mentorship.

Now because they have perservered against horrific attacks by Kurdish, Shiite and Sunni extremists they have a chance at a future. This is a reason for them to celebrate.

They have gone through many "gates" since I first deployed there in 05 toward establishing a Democratic control of their country. From an appointed Interim Gov, the making of their constitution and the people voting on it, the election of central gov, provincial elections, training of a ten Division Army, taking control of the Provinces Militarily and now now taking the lead in their major cities.

That is a HUGE accomplishment that people Like Gen Odierno have been working towards for a LONG time, making huge sacrifices to achieve. Ms Wests dismissive attitude towards him shows just how clueless she is about what is going on in the region.

Ms West and MoveOn.Org
I am still steamed over her dismissive comments about an American Hero Gen Odierno.

Gen Odierno's bio reads in part:
General Odierno returned to Iraq to assume command of MNF-I less than seven months after completing a 15-month deployment with III Corps from December 2006 to February 2008, during which he served as the Commanding General, Multi-National Corps - Iraq. As the day-to-day commander of Coalition Forces in Iraq, General Odierno was the operational architect of the Surge and was responsible for implementing the counterinsurgency strategy that led to the dramatic decrease in violence in Iraq in 2007 and 2008.
He is noted for being one of few Army generals in history to command a division, corps and entire theater in the same conflict.

From October 2001 to June 2004, he commanded the 4th Infantry Division, leading the division throughout the first year of Operation Iraqi Freedom from April 2003 to March 2004. The unit was headquartered in the restive Sunni triangle and in a significant accomplishment his troops captured Saddam Hussein.

he accompanied the Secretary of State on diplomatic journeys and state visits, traveling over 335,000 miles and visiting over 65 countries, while attending international events ranging from NATO and APEC Summits to Pakistan earthquake relief efforts.

General Odierno has a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from West Point and master’s degrees in Nuclear Effects Engineering and National Security and Strategy from North Carolina State University and the Naval War College, respectively. He is also a graduate of the Army War College.

her Dismissive "Gen. Raymond Odierno went all political, talking-pointing to Iraqis' "progression in their capacities" blah, blah." is not much better then MoveOn.org calling his predecessor Gen Betray Us.

Hey Tinsldr2: How have you been?
.

Aside to Anne
I have been good. Retired from the Army now and spending more time fishing and on Fishing Forums then talking Politics.

Glad I don't work for the Current CIC. Just like we predicted before the election his Socialist policies and lack of foreign policy accumen is driving us toward ruin.

I have never been a fan of Ms West and rarely readher but the title of her article caught my interest and like most of her articles it is a loser.

Hope you are well, and all (including liberals and even Ms West) have a great holiday.

Sceaming about a lost cause?
Unfortunately, we were NOT greeted as liberators. That's disappointing to most and shocking to neocons. Mailiki's crowing in "local politics" mode. Besides. He'll want that US troop support within reach since Iraq's not ready to take on 'ol "Ok-med" and the Iranians...Earth to West: ANY nation would tire of being occupied by a foreign military for seven years. If you expect undying "love", it's time to trade in that "Bush doctrine" handbook.

Har har har har
Well if America did not quite unnecessarily choose to make such "profound" sacrifices for the sake of Iraq, all of those wasted trillions of dollars we have spent there could have been spent somewhere else, like maybe here in America! Then we would not now be complaining about Maliki's "ingratitude".

Indeed, do declare U.S. independence from Iraq, and pull out all of our forces! Ahhhh, but we just love those military bases, and we will have to protect whatever western oil companies get to exploit their oil fields . . .

Next.

Oil, oil, oil...............
Steal a new cd, stupid, it's not "about the oil".

To Diana West's Critics
Hey, critics of Diana West.

I'm a fan and supporter of West's work.

FYI, she's one of the media's most intense hawks on winning this World War we're in. She's a great supporter of the military (her dad was a WWII vet).

West is also a student of Islam and has a much greater understanding of the nature of the enemy than do many of our military or elected leaders. Most have their heads in the sand when it comes to linking Islamic doctrine and Muslim law to the jihad movement. I'm not talking about military tactics. I'm talking about the realities of Islamic doctrines and their direct applications against us in acts of war. During Bush's last days, it became verboten to even mention Islam and jihad or terrorism in the same paragraph at the Pentagon. Obama's picked up where Bush left off: Islam is a great religion of peace. Rubbish!

It doesn't matter what we do over there, now. We are and always will be Infidels to the World of Islam. West fully understands that and has called on several occasions for a massive strategic re-reckoning as to how we should fight this war to win it.

So, while I appreciate you being entitled to criticize the lady, I think you who criticize her don't even know what you're talking about with regard to what is actually drving the jihad. West knows. Do your homework.

What Ms West is to ignorant to know
President Jalal Talabani said the day could not have happened without the help of the United States, which invaded Iraq in 2003 with the aim of ousting Saddam Hussein — who was later convicted by an Iraqi court and executed in Dec. 2006.

"While we celebrate this day, we express our thanks and gratitude to our friends in the coalition forces who faced risks and responsibilities and sustained casualties and damage while helping Iraq to get rid from the ugliest dictatorship and during the joint effort to impose security and stability," Talabani said.

Describing June 30 as a "glorious page" in Iraq's history, Talabani warned that "security will not be achieved completely without proper political environment and without a real national unity and reconciliation."

Quotes From a Foxnews page.

Or from the senior Al-Malaki aid that said "the withdrawal of American troops is completed now from all cities after everything they sacrificed for the sake of security." Sadiq Al-Rikabi told The Associated Press on Tuesday that "we are now celebrating the restoration of sovereignty."

http://yalibnan.com/site/archives/2009/06/baghdad_proclai.p hp

Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani, whose speech also did not mention American forces, said that was only because the leaders wanted to congratulate the Iraqi commanders.

“It was a chance for the commanders to see their leaders, raise their spirits and contribute to their morale,” he said. “The American forces still have a very big role, and they’ve made lots of sacrifices to help bring this land to security and stability

Calm Down, Tinsldr
Why so much venom against Diana West? You'd do better if you made your points without the ad hominems.

I personally am sick of the US groveling to the ingrate Arabs but you don't seem to mind.

BTW, were you infantry?

Down, Diana, Down.
Ms West ... just like Conservatives in America , Iraqi leaders have to pay lip services to their Base to keep them in line.

So don't be upset at Maliki.... he was not talking to You. Unless HIS PEOPLE can somehow feel Vistorious over Something / Anything during this transition, they will feel DEFEATED Instead.

Lepanto

Date: Jul 3, 2009 - 10:00 AM EST Lies, Liars and Politicians
Malaki is lying about our troops leaving as Obama lied that he would immediately pull our troops out of Iraq. Master Politicians at work

-----

Obama never- ever said that he would immediately pull our troops out of Iraq..

He said "Out In 16 months"... So 5 1/2 months in office .. he has started the process.

So in essence You are either Lying or just terminally misinformed.

Ooooo John
Your argumentation is sooooo persuasive . . .

Turn off the TV now, it is ok . . .

Sky Pete misinformed or lying??? and Lou
Sky pete said "Obama never- ever said that he would immediately pull our troops out of Iraq..

He said "Out In 16 months"... So 5 1/2 months in office .. he has started the process.

So in essence You are either Lying or just terminally misinformed. "

Well president BUSH was in office when the timeline for withdrawl from the major cities and pull out of our troops in 2011 was established. Pres Obama did NOT START any process but he simply continued the policy of President Bush in Iraq.

Pres Obama is only capitalizing on the success of the Surge that he so roundly criticized as not going to work at it's start when he was a Senator.

Did you know that Pres Obama is sending the 3rd Infantry Division HQ(Rock of the Marne) BACK to Iraq in Sep-Oct 2009? They will be there for a 12 month deployment and it will be the 4th time the Division deployed there although many of the individual Soldiers will have deployed more often. But then again that deployment was already planned before Obama took office.

Bottom line is Pres Obama has done NOTHING to speed up the withdrawl of American forces and even this already co-ordinated withdrawl from the cities is NOT a major troop withdrawl from Iraq. They are just re-basing to larger bases like the Victory Base Complex near Baghdad.

Rob

P.S. to lou, I spent 4 years enlisted infantry active and another 5 reserve Infantry before I got my active duty (Regular Army) commision for the last 17 years (2 Bronze Stars three MSMs)Deployed to Kuwait in 94, Bosnia 96, Kosovo 2000, Iraq 2005 and 2007 the last was a 15 month deployment. How bout you?
The fact that Americans like Ms West and moveon.org are disrespectful to our military Heroes like Gen Petraeus and Gen Odierno along with our troops in the field, is much more upseting to me then the comments of a Muslim in a speech to prop up his troops on a historic occasion we have been working towards.

A lifetime
on the public dole, guarding the rich mans' "interests".

Not very creative, but at least you have a job.

Incensed
I appreciate your fervor and feelings about Mr. al-Maliki's comments, but I must say that your biting commentary regarding the quote from Lt. Col Karcher has driven me to reply. Lt. Col. Karcher is a professional officer, respected by his troops, and follows the orders of his superiors. You may not be aware, but on the day of the signover of the combat positions in Sadr City, Lt. Col. Karcher's convoy was hit by a IED attack resulting in the death of his driver and Karcher losing both his legs. During the return of the convoy after evacuating casualties, they were hit again resulting in another fatality.

I would ask you not to disparage the character of individuals who are putting themselves in harms way, following the orders of their superiors, and achieving their mission as assigned.

That's gratitude 4U!
Last week, British Petroleum and its partner, China National Petroleum were awarded a contract for the Rumaila oil field in southeastern Iraq. So Planet Earth continues to revolve on its axis around the Sun, but we would never hear about it! Could we imagine that the Iraqis be that ungrateful now that the Americans have began to leave their soil and hand their oil concessions to Brits and Chinese who participated minimally and not at all, respectively, in their 'liberation'? That's gratitude.

Meanwhile, we see what Obama has done for his constituents who are losing jobs at a record pace, while he threatens to increase taxes on U.S. corporations who have overseas operations.
That'll teach those corporations with foreign operations! They will just have to move their headquarters and jobs overseas, beyond the reach of the marxist in chief, ODumbo.
