Gibbs: I'll tell you what a local election is...
Posted by: John Hanlon at 6:00 AM
I just saw this CNN.com story about Robert Gibbs referring to the state elections in New Jersey and Virginia as local elections while putting a lot of emphasis on a Congressional race in upstate New York.

I might not be an expert in geography but shouldn't an election in one out of over 400 Congressional districts be considered more of a local election than a Governor's race?

Yeah, I figured my question
would kill the thread.

Bunch of hypocritical ignoramus's on here. I love that you all think there is some kind of GOP resurgence going on. You've lost all 5 special congressional elections this year and the Dem majority has expanded.

Enjoy your governorships while we run the country.
Ted writes: Thursday, November, 05, 2009 3:10 PM
Didn't Ari Fleischer say the same thing?
In 2001 when the Democrats won the governorship of VA and NJ, Ari Fleischer dismissed the results as "local elections". I saw the clip yesterday.

Can someone explain how this is any different?

There are ARMY USNS ships too. They are, in fact, controlled by the Navy, but are dedicated to the Army.

I put a new BOB HOPE class ship into service a few years ago, USNS SEAY (T-AKR 5003) that was named after an Army Staff Sgt. I believe there were ten of these all together, all named after Army heros, except two -- think I am right about that.

They were HUGE ships, about fifty feet shorter than an aircraft and taller than an aircraft carrier. (had to lower the mast to get under some bridges, such as the one in Beaufort, TX.)

hey there, sorry for the mistake I should have said USS but I have an alibi, I'm an army wife/mom... and though I work in a joint command, somewhere in Miami, and should have know better, all my missions have to do with USNS's. Thank you both of you make my day!!

I Heard The Wicked Witch Of The West,,,,
Nancy"where's my prozac"Pelosi say the democrats won on Tuesday because NY-23 was for a national seat.Seeing as how democrats are counting their votes it speaks to landslide victories for consrevatives in 2010.

Just over 100,000 people voted in NY-23,Dem's squeeked past an unknown and a spoiler.

In NJ and Virginia 7million people voted and together conservatives won by a landslide.

Speedicut, thank you.
And good point Paul, both men presented themselves as "partners." A repudiation of Corzine's policies should indicate a repudiation of those same policies pushed by Obama.

And where the heck is, Obama?...
President Obama? Where's he on this "TRANSPARENCY" issue?
Out to lunch.
On the golf course for the 32nd time.
On vacation for the umpteenth time.
Wringing his hands over making a decision in Afghanistan.
Everywhere but focused on this, "TRANSPARENCY" issue.

These are only three examples of those POWERFUL positions held by extremists which the White House continues to support with NO vetting and NO oversight whatsoever. And NO "transparency", that much-ballyhooed campaign rhetoric which has all but faded from the memories of those who pulled the lever in November, 2008
clarityseeker writes: Thursday, November, 05, 2009 10:34 AM
Demanding "transparency" from a prez'...
...who promised it.
...who campaigned on it.
...who endlessly yammered on about how much we needed it, how much he would provide it.

Susan Collins, Maine Senator, has been for months requesting that the WH Czars be vetted by the senate.
She has made the strong case that these Czars bypass the laws in place and the legislative process---thereby contributing to LESS transparency American government has been operating under.

Democrats have done nothing but stonewall SUsan Collins' appeals. Senator Lieberman, Independent, has allowed hearings on this and conclusions have been consistent with Collins' argumtents.

Van Jones, Czar extraordinaire was let go. Not by conservatives, mind you. But by those who appointed him. Those who celebrated his appointment. Those who shouted out that he was a stellar appointee.

Cass Sunstein, Regulatory Czar extraordinaire. He wants animals to be represented by attorneys. He wants alot of things which do not make sense, however, "vetting him"? The WH thinks this is unnecessary. No matter that Sunstein supported taking people’s organs "against their will." And many other oddities.

John Holdren, Science Czar. Not the least of his accomplishments include a 1977 environmental science textbook he co-authored that surveyed policy options to curb overpopulation.

In a chapter on "population policies," the authors mentioned involuntary fertility control methods like mandatory abortions, mandating family size, and adding sterilants to drinking water or staple foods. WOW!!!-----NO NEED TO VET THIS GUY, Susan Collins.

Mark Lloyd, "Diversity" Czar. He wants the Fairness Doctrine reinstated--and desires a backdoor method of achieving this. "Diversity", that slippery concept that Liberals heralded, and have wielded for decades in myriad muck-ups.

A correction with all due respect -- (and I do have a lot of respect for you!)

USS -- UNITED STATES SHIP -- a ship that is commissioned as a warship of the United States. It flies a commissioning pennant. USS ships are manned with military folks although some carry civilian technicians and such. There are legal implications associated with USS ships and, as warships, have certain rights under international law..

USNS -- UNITED STATES NAVAL SHIP -- a Navy controlled ship that is not a commissioned United States warship. USNS ships might serve the same function as a similar ship that is commissioned, such as tankers and stores ships. (I believe, but am not certain, that all tankers and stores ships are now civilian manned.) USNS ships are manned with civil servants of the Military Sealift Command, or by members of the United States Merchant Marines, who are civilian seamen.

So, the NEW YORK is, correctly, USS NEW YORK

Have been watching it on TV this morning. It certain makes you proud of this fine country. What a wonderful tribute to those who lost their lives. Good thing this was started before Obama became president as I doubt it would have happened if he had been.

Local issues like taxes...

Hello. THat is a BIG issue across the Country. But just keep thinking you can P off the hand that feeds govt. Eventually it bites hard to protect itself.

A local election
is me choosing the township board members or local dogcatcher. State delegates and governors are not local, they cover 1/50th of the US (1/57th, Baracula). Do you dismiss 1/50th of the population? Why, yes, if you're a Dumbocrat.

If you go to John Corzines website, right there on the front page is a video entitled "Obama & Corzine - One Voice". I think that pretty much sums up how ridiculous this liberal meme of "local election" is.

Corzine bound himself at the hip to Obama in an attempt to win this and these folk just cannot face the fact that that is the most likely reason he lost.

2 of the 4 videos on that page are emphasizing the Obama/Corzine connection. Running from it now is a bit late.

Val is just another sad troll who is angry that the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that the libs have promised has yet to appear. She is angry as she just knows if those with any sense at all would just step aside her dreams would come true. She is so sure that we conservatives are standing in the way of having a world where all just hug and kiss and all your wants and needs magically appear via the government.

Obama not being able to secure a win for Corzine is huge.

The people in New Jersey saw first hand the result of how well the tax and spend policy works. Obama coming to New Jersey to claim that voting for Corzine was backing him certainly did Corzine no good. You cannot convince people who are taxed to death, live in a state that is billions of dollars and debt and loses businesses on a daily basis that what they really need is more of the same.
MaineConservative writes: Thursday, November, 05, 2009 9:03 AM
Of course this is the Obamao spin
How many times did he campaign in NJ with Corzine? Does the president do that during "local" elections? Corzine loses in a solidly blue state - and by four percentage points - WOW.

Wasn't it only a year ago we were told that Virginia was if not turning true blue, was at least purple. Now the Replican wins the governorshiop by 18 POINTS - WOW.

And a conservative nobody from upstate New York comes out of nowhere and nearly wins a House seat where the stupid party spent $1 on a liberal candidate who finally dropped out and endorsed the democrat! WOW!

Spin it any way you want. This was not good for our Messiah and his sheep.

Corzine
The resident of New Jersey voted to end the very same policies that Obama is bringing to the entire country. Four years of Corzine gave New Jersey enormous debt, businesses and citizens leaving on a daily basis leaving behind nothing but scattered unemployed bodies to try to pick up the pieces. Cozine and his tax and spend policies mimic those of the current administration.

Corzine showed the same arrogance as Obama. He did not care about the will of the people only his own ideology. That ideology has done a great deal of damage to the State of New Jersey. Obama and his administration are trying to take the same path for the entire country. Just as the people of New Jersey found out these policies only lead to disaster the rest of the country will soon follow. All the money spend by Corzine and all the Obama campaigning could not change the facts.

This was a huge win for the state and I would be hard pressed to think any democrat will do well here for a very long time. The campaigning by Obama did more to hurt Corzine than it did help him. It reminded them that they must make a change if they want to survive.

Val,
I guess in your zeal to show that you're not a wino...sorry, I guess that wasn't your intent.

If only you could ever directly refute a point. All you have is personal attacks and the names of political figures you really don't like. My advice to you: go get some fresh air and some perspective.
Val writes: Thursday, November, 05, 2009 7:38 AM
utter nonsense
yes and the sky is yellow little crispian!

I guess in your zeal to prove to your fellows here that you're not a "simple RHINO" you would barf out such utter garbage.

Its pretty clear that the keys to the two GOP victories were because they were waged on local issues like transportation and taxes -not bloviation form stupid conservatives like Sarah Palin and her rotten ilk.

Par example chowderhead-Sara Palinand her moron friends on the tea party express did not campain in VA for McDonnell-and he won without kissing the Limbaugh ring or showing up on Fox every five seconds like Hoffman was. While on the other hand we all saw what happened in NY-23 and it was hardly some glorious victory showing the conservativce candiate always wins-sorry-he didn't.

Please get some perspective-and then take that to heart.

Crispian writes: Thursday, November, 05, 2009 7:11 AM
"local elections"
I don't think any election is purely local, not even a mayoral race. Many people will vote by party - and the perception of party is based on national issues.

When non-local college students vote in local elections, they typically vote for the "D" and it has nothing to do with local issues, of which they are largely ignorant.

And if we consider the "local concerns" of NJ, they are things like high unemployment. Obama claims to have ended the recession and created 650,000 jobs...so that's not a purely local issue.

In NY23, the vote was between a conservative Democrat, a liberal Republican, and an actual Conservative. The truth is, the people of that district are conservative. That is local to NY23 but as I explained also has national implications.

The national implications are that the Democrats must be conservative to win elections. I hope Gibbs and friends take that to heart.
